Dear Adelaide Farmers’ Market member
On behalf of the Adelaide Showground Farmers’ Market (ASFM), I would like to inform you of a decision that has been made in relation to the future of the Gawler Farmers’ Market.
In January 2016, the Gawler Farmers’ Market was opened to offer a new opportunity for farmers and food producers to sell their fresh, seasonal local produce and food products direct to local customers. After a successful start the market has seen a decline in attendance by both stallholders and customers. Following regular reviews and with winter approaching, it was decided that changes were required.
The ASFM committee has determined that the limited financial and staff resources of its organisation should be concentrated on delivering some new initiatives and improvements as part of a new strategic plan for the next five years. As a result the decision has been made that the ASFM should no longer manage the Gawler Farmers’ Market and discussions are underway with a local organisation about the future operations of the market, with support being offered to facilitate a smooth handover.
The market will therefore close for a winter recess, with the last market under the control of our organisation to be held on Saturday 10 June 2017. We are hopeful that the market will be re-launched in spring under new local market management.
We thank the staff and elected members of the Town of Gawler council and the local residents for their support of our farmers and producers throughout the establishment and operation of the Gawler Farmers' Market. We hope that the shoppers who did frequent the Gawler Farmers’ Market will continue to support farmers’ markets in the future.
Market members who joined Gawler Farmers’ Market will be contacted by the ASFM office and offered the opportunity to receive a full refund on their membership.
Acting Chair – Adelaide Showground Farmers’ Market Inc.
Gawler Farmers’ Market was held on Saturday mornings from 8am until 12noon from the Gawler Visitor Information Centre car park (the corner of Murray St and Lyndoch Rd, Gawler). The market showcased fresh, seasonal South Australian produce, sold directly from farmers and producers to the local community. The stallholders provided a diverse mix of meats, fruits, vegetables, eggs, nuts, jams and chutney, breads and smallgoods.
